COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - One day after a U.S. district judge denied the utility company's attempt to halt a 15 percent rate cut to customers as a result of the failed VC Summer Nuclear project, SCE&G filed a motion to stop the judge's order.

The motions were filed on Aug. 7 in the U.S. Court of Appeal's Fourth District. In it, it's asking to appeal the orders issued on Aug. 6 and the order denying the motion for injunction pending appeal on Aug. 7.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge J. Michelle Childs said that the utility's request did not hold "merit" and said the proposed rate cut would happen. SCE&G argued the rate cut would harm the company.

Monday's decision will reduce the electric bills for more than 700,000 homeowners, and businesses immediately.

Those customers should also expect to get a rebate, retroactive between April and July of this year. The rate cuts will remain in place through the end of the year.

The South Carolina Public Service Commission has until December to decide whether SCE&G or its ratepayers will pay for the abandoned power plants over the next several decades.
