This touching video shows the emotional moment a five-year-old boy was reunited with his mother.

Ghalib is smiling from ear to ear as he is led to meet his mum by Red Cross workers.

The boy and his mum were separated during conflict in Mosul, northern Iraq.

Ghalib suffered severe burns and injuries to his hand after an attack near his home in West Mosul.

During the blast, he was torn from his family and they feared the worst.

Ghalib needed 10 operations while he was cared for by a relative of another patient while being treated at the West Mosul General Hospital by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

His mother tried desperately to find him by showing people photos of him in camps and hospitals, until an ICRC staffer recognised his picture and was able to set the wheels in motion for the pair to reunite.

Ghalib is now back with his mum and two siblings and is recovering well.

A spokesperson for ICRC told Metro.co.uk: ‘The pain of not knowing if your child is safe is every parent’s worst nightmare. Yet, for families affected by conflict or natural disaster it is a daily reality, one that can last for years.

‘Reuniting families is as important to the Red Cross’ humanitarian mission as providing food or shelter or water.

‘For nearly 150 years the ICRC and its partners in the Red Cross movement around the world has worked to bring families separated by conflict of natural disaster back together again. Sometimes this can be through a letter or a phone call and sometimes through a reunion.

‘Since 2012 the ICRC has seen a nearly 90% increase in the number of new cases reported. Last year alone, they opened 18,000 new cases of people searching for family members.’
