Ecuadorian Red Cross supports people in human mobility situation at borders and transit points

To assist the greatest number of people with urgent needs and in human mobility situation, the Ecuadorian Red Cross, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), are providing humanitarian assistance in three locations of the country: two at the north border (Rumichaca and Sucumbios), and one at south (Huaquillas).

In Rumichaca, a border town that connects Ecuador and Colombia in the north of the country, and that is located 239k. from Quito, were reported during the month of July: 2,997 phone calls and eight access to internet to Restoring Family Links (RFL), as well as 1,193 cell phone charges. Humanitarian assistance was also provided, through volunteers and technicians, in water, sanitation and hygiene, psychosocial support, basic first aids and RFL; this assistance will continue for the next six months. Also, in the southern border of the country, in the town of Huaquillas, located at 599km. from the capital and in the border with Peru, Ecuadorian Red Cross volunteers deliver nutritional kits at the Binational Border Service Center (CEBAF, for its initials in Spanish).

According to data from the IFRC, around 26,6% of world’s migrants (61,6 million people) live in the Americas (including the Caribbean). Migrants and internally displaced people who try to establish themselves in other places, are often subjected to discrimination, violence and lack of access to social services. This numbers have mobilized the call of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
