Hungary: 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions
2024 marked the 75th anniversary of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, the foundational treaties of IHL that exist to prevent some of armed conflicts’ worst consequences and to preserve a minimum of humanity even in times of war. This event was commemorated throughout the region covered by the ICRC’s delegation in Warsaw.
On 11 November, the ICRC delivered a statement at the conference “Humanitarian Values and Challenges in Commemoration of the Anniversary of the International Conventions”, organized in Budapest by the Hungarian Red Cross in cooperation with the Hungarian foreign and defence ministries. The ICRC statement focused on the need to preserve humanity in war, given the unprecedented scale of humanitarian needs that are arising from conflicts worldwide.
